The Science Behind SoulVeil®

We didn't invent these patterns.

Psychology discovered them decades ago.

The Question We Started With

Why do some comments stay with us long after we've read them, while others disappear immediately?

To answer that question, we reviewed research from psychology, neuroscience, communication science, cyberbullying research, and wellbeing studies — including a 2022 study of 135 content creators, most of whom could recall at least one hate-or-harassment incident, with roughly one in three reporting regular attacks.

What We Found

Discoveries That Made SoulVeil Possible

Communication Science

The Psychological Concept

Online Disinhibition Effect

Distance and anonymity make people say things online they would never say face-to-face.

Real-World Example

A comment that would never be said to someone's face gets typed in seconds, to an audience of thousands.

How SoulVeil Applies It

SoulVeil's Provocation & Destabilization category catches trolling and rage-bait built specifically around the distance the internet provides — before the comment ever needs an explicit slur.

The Psychological Concept

Negativity Bias

The brain weighs negative information far more heavily than positive information of the same size.

Real-World Example

One negative comment can outweigh dozens of positive ones.

How SoulVeil Applies It

SoulVeil classifies by psychological impact, not by how many other comments are positive — one high-impact comment gets flagged even in an otherwise supportive comment section.

The Psychological Concept

Allostatic Load

Minor stressors that repeat often do more damage than one dramatic incident.

Real-World Example

Most harmful comments are not shocking. They are repetitive.

How SoulVeil Applies It

SoulVeil's Subtle Undermining category catches these comments individually — backhanded compliments, comparison attacks, concern trolling — while the Cumulative Stress Index tracks how often they add up over time, so the repetition itself becomes visible, not just any one instance.

The Psychological Concept

The Looking-Glass Self

People build their sense of self from the judgments they imagine others are making.

Real-World Example

A public comment section, read by thousands, becomes raw material for how someone sees themselves.

How SoulVeil Applies It

The Identity Attacks category exists because of this — appearance, character, and talent attacks are filtered before they can compound into someone's self-image.

The Psychological Concept

Parasocial Interaction

Audiences form real emotional attachments to creators who have never met them.

Real-World Example

A stranger who has never met a creator can still feel personally betrayed by them.

How SoulVeil Applies It

The Emotional Manipulation and Boundary Violations categories catch guilt-tripping, possessiveness, and entitlement — the behavioral signature of one-sided attachment turning into pressure.

Neuroscience

The Psychological Concept

Social Pain

Psychological harm doesn't need a broken rule to be real.

Real-World Example

A comment that breaks no rule can still hurt exactly as much as one that does.

How SoulVeil Applies It

This is the core design principle behind every category: SoulVeil classifies by psychological harm, not platform policy — so a comment that's technically "allowed" but genuinely damaging still gets caught.

Eisenberger, Lieberman & Williams, 2003Sherman et al., 2016Dickerson & Kemeny, 2004

These discoveries are the foundation SoulVeil’s six practical harm categories are built on.

What this does — and does not — establish

Research shows that negative and repeated social feedback can affect mood, stress, and long-term well-being. SoulVeil is designed to give creators more control over which forms of feedback reach them, and when. That is a meaningfully different claim from saying SoulVeil itself has been clinically proven to reduce psychological harm — that would require dedicated research on SoulVeil specifically, which is a goal for later, not a claim we make today.
